Just before the summer I was asked to paint the Sackville Theatre stage for a production called ‘Norse’ written by Jim Grant. Tyga Helme, Corissa Collier and I painted a huge collaborative semi-abstract work. We were frequently moving around the stage to work on top of a range of areas, and on top of each other’s marks. These are some photographs of the stage when it was almost finished. You can see that the design spills over the edges of the stage and into the audience. We used UV paint lift an abstracted tree form from the design at various stages during the production. All performances were sold out.
Work in progress, taking the design under the audience and up the stairs.
I now have about 6 large sections of the painting on which to continue to develop work. The base layer is already an abstracted section of this whole, as well as being a collaboration. I intend to work on these with a range of other people including groups (Hospice in the Weald & Crisis at Christmas). Each section is full of unfamiliar marks. Am quite in love with them!
